Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme enables a young person to develop their mind, body and soul in a non-competitive environment. It has the ability to elevate self-confidence, skills and aspirations should never be underestimated.

The object is to provide an introduction to worthwhile leisure activities and voluntary services; as a challenge to the individual to discover the satisfaction of achievement.

Here at Winchcombe School we are very committed to the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and undertake a range of activities throughout the school year, all leading to the achievement of an Award that is recognized by Universities and employers alike.

Enrolment is open to pupils moving into Years 9 and 10 for the DofE Bronze scheme which starts in September. Pupils must have reached their 14^th birthday by 31^st January to be eligible for that year.

Once successful at bronze level, pupils have the opportunity to carry onto their Silver award if they so wish.

During the courses, students will be expected to attend weekly meetings after school and will develop their experience in the following areas:

• Self-confidence and independence
• Learning new skills
• Helping the community/volunteering
• First Aid
• Sporting Activity
• Learning map-reading/compass skills
• Camping (outdoor survival skills
• Team Building

Unfortunately, Gloucester County Council are no longer funding this scheme and therefore Winchcombe School have set up its own ‘Directly Licensed Centre’ which means there will be a charge to cover the cost for activities and expeditions. An initial payment is taken in September to cover registration fees, all training and practice walks. There will be a further charge for their expedition which takes place in July.
